Samurai Unicorn: Minecraft Meets Cyberpunk

Samurai Unicorn: Minecraft Meets Cyberpunk
If you have not gotten enough 1995 graphics looking games then there is this new cyberpunk genre game in development called Samurai Unicorn. Being developed by indie studio It's Got Stealth. It seems development is being funded mostly via Patreon. More info on their website but here is their run down about the game;

Set in the sprawling city of Sydney3, Klo and Unicorn must battle the rising threat of the Dream Eaters, while navigating the corporate bureaucracy of the dangerous Goliath megacorporation.

Independently produced and developed by Its Got Stealth, Samurai Unicorn is an action game that lovingly evokes PS1-era graphics to create a world that is instantly nostalgic, but ready to explore contemporary stories.

Third-Person Survival Action
Enter dangerous landmarks overrun with VRmin to hunt down and eliminate Dream Eaters who control them. The only thing that will get you through these dungeons is Klo’s wits and her trusty service weapon.

Battle Powerful Monsters
Face off against unique boss enemies by using Unicorn’s abilities to exploit their weaknesses and defeat them in spectacular duels themed around each Dream Eater’s personality.

VG24/7: Cyberpunk sequel Ghostrunner 2 announced for Xbox, PlayStation and PC

VG24/7: Cyberpunk sequel Ghostrunner 2 announced for Xbox, PlayStation and PC
VG247 gives us the low down on the just announced cyberpunk themed game Ghostrunner 2. Here is a snip;

Equip your neon-tinted sunglasses, rage against the corporate machine, and break out the synthwave: Ghostrunner 2 is real – and it's ready to stylishly slice up your preffered gaming platform and run it over with a needlessly loud motorbike at some point later in 2023.

Per a press release, Ghostrunner 2 is a proper sequel to the first-person action game hit. It's set one year after Ghostrunner, and stars cyber ninja protagonist Jack emerging from the deathtrap of Dharma Tower for the first time to explore the sprawling wasteland beyond.

PC Gamer: The Best Cyberpunk Games to Play in 2023

PC Gamer: The Best Cyberpunk Games to Play in 2023
PC Gamer does a run down of many previously released cyberpunk themed games that 2077 fans may enjoy too. Here is a snip;

Shadowrun: Dragonfall – Director's Cut

Release date: 2014 | Developer: Harebrained Schemes

Like the other Shadowrun games, which are based on a tabletop RPG first released in 1989, Dragonfall is an unlikely blend of cyberpunk and high fantasy—a flavor combination that works surprisingly well. This tech-noir RPG features a rich urban setting to explore with its vision of Berlin in the year 2054 and especially the Kreuzbasar hub area, satisfyingly tactical turn-based combat, and an array of different ways to play, whether you want to be an elite ork hacker or an elven street samurai.

GameRant: Cyberpunk Battle Royale Game Off the Grid Details

GameRant: Cyberpunk Battle Royale Game Off the Grid Details
GameRant talks to the developers and shows new footage of the cyberpunk-esque shooter Off the Grid. Personally I think they are pushing the cyberpunk aspect a bit too hard vs the actual aesthetic but none the less make your own conclusions. Here is a snip;

Off the Grid is an upcoming, third-person Cyberpunk Battle Royale game with PVP and PVE online multiplayer gameplay. Off the Grid's dystopian setting also presents opportunities to add new or unique Cyberpunk-style weapons to the table with a strong focus on cyberlimbs. Off the Grid's SWITCHER Part 1 and 2 cinematics showcase various kinds of cyberware, from cyberlegs to cyberarms and visors. Therefore, players look to be in for a treat with seemingly a wide range of futuristic tech wear customization options for their Zero mercenaries.

The Cyberpunk genre often features some of the coolest weapons in sci-fi games and Game Rant exclusively interviewed several members of Off the Grid's development team about its weapons, customization options, and more. In addition to learning more about the importance of cyberlimbs, Game Rant also learned more about Off the Grid's unique weapon interactions, including some exclusive images of weapons and modifications.

PC Gamer: Cyberpunk Detective Game is Like an Endless Deus Ex

PC Gamer: Cyberpunk Detective Game is Like an Endless Deus Ex
Shadow of Doubt is a retro style cyberpunk detective game now in early access that PC Gamer has a preview of. Here is a snip;

Shadows of Doubt, which is out on April 24 in early access, had led me up the garden path. The murder of Matthew Parker—Qiao's unfortunate husband—was just another in a line of crimes that the game had procedurally generated as I explored its world. The victims selected and evidence scattered according to the whims of an algorithm, red herrings and all.

Although I'm meant to be a hard-bitten cyberpunk private eye, picking up word of murders on the scanner and solving them for cash, I'd made a rookie error. I'd focused on the parts that did fit over the seemingly minor details that didn't. I couldn't explain why, for example, Qiao would drop an incoherent note ranting about a promotion next to the body of her husband, but I was sure it'd all come together in the end. More fool me. Hoist by my own procgen petard.

POCGamer: Immortal Impact in Cyberpunk

POCGamer: Immortal Impact in Cyberpunk
POC Gamer takes a look at the in world impact of people in Cyberpunk genre and the 2077 NPCs specifically of living ungodly life spans. Such as Kerry and Rogue all living into their 80s plus still working and not deep into retirement. This hits on a topic I have been talking about for some time so glad to see others are deep diving into it. Here is a snip;

One of the things that really struck me about Cyberpunk RED, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and Cyberpunk 2077 is how same looking and feeling they are to Cyberpunk 2020. Sure, some weapons are different, the cyberware varies, and there’s more augmented reality, but there’s not a lot different in terms of style, design, or music. Everything seems locked in pretty hard. Why? Part of it is pragmatic design. There’s only so many ways to make a flak vest or a gun. But then there’s Kerry Eurodyne and the other former members of Samurai. They were all 20-somethings in 2013 when Johnny took his first shot at assaulting Arasaka Tower. They’re all still alive and active in 2077, and looking (person dependent) on 40 to 50-somethings. All still alive and all still influencing the scene when they should be deep into retirement.

In the real world, we’re still struggling with the influence in popular culture of shows and tropes from the earliest days of movies and TV. And these still crop up frequently and we watch reboot after reboot happen as the fans of stuff get to a level where they can use their clout to reimagine things. Now imagine a world where celebrities major influencers could literally say no to aging and continue to influence culture. It wouldn’t just be the influence of old media and concepts on newly made media and concepts. It’s the same people!

PC Gamer: The best cyberpunk games to play in 2023

PC Gamer: The best cyberpunk games to play in 2023
PC Gamer has a list of what they consider the best cyberpunk genre games in 2023 that that say are "better than Cyberpunk 2077". What. The. Fuck. Well shots fired it seems, here is their list and a snip below, thoughts?
Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Release date: 2011 | Developer: Eidos Montréal | Steam, GOG

(Image credit: Eidos)

The original Deus Ex carries a lot of nostalgia, making it a tough act for Eidos Montréal to follow. The studio's take on Deus Ex packed its city hubs with missions and world-building, a conspiracy-laden plot, powerful augmentations (including the abilities to punch through walls and turn invisible), and that rare thing—a hacking minigame that wasn't terrible. Deus Ex: Human Revolution managed to stake out an identity of its own in the shadow of the original,  though it ended up up casting a shadow its own sequel, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, couldn't measure up to.

PC Gamer: It's time for cyberpunk games to remember how to be punk

PC Gamer: It's time for cyberpunk games to remember how to be punk
PC Gamer has a really solid article about how with all the cyberpunk games on the market, many miss the "punk" aspect. Some to the point they miss the entire point of the genre. A really good article that praises one of my favorite cyberpunk settings Shadowrun as well as give some props to 2077. However they are correct in the article when they say 2077 tried to have it both ways, and it didn't work for the most part. Here is a snip;

One game where the malcontents and outsiders get to star is Shadowrun: Dragonfall (opens in new tab). The Shadowrun series is an unlikely mash-up of fantasy and cyberpunk that exaggerates the clichés of each, where the dragon who demands tribute and the TV personality admired by millions are one and the same—Smaug recast as Max Headroom. Perhaps it's that exaggeration of the basic tropes that makes Shadowrun feel true to cyberpunk fiction, in spite of the elves.

Shadowrunners are hackers and spies who can be hired online, like Uber but for corporate espionage, and in Dragonfall your band of runners have a secret base under a market in the anarchist free state of Berlin. Dragonfall is as much about protecting the societal dregs who are your neighbours—drug addicts and shifty coffee dealers—as it is about making money. Also, one of the party members is an actual punk, the former lead singer of a band with the wonderful name MESSERKAMPF!
